A Warm Welcome to the CA Suffolk Section

We hold a wide variety of events each year, ranging from ‘celebrity’ speakers to a very popular evening, when members share their experiences “Near and Far”, from Mediterranean cruises to family holidays in local waters. This event also hosts our very popular annual photo competition. (See Right)judging the competition

Meetings are held jointly with the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, at Woolverstone on the banks of the River Orwell, generally on a Friday or Saturday evening. There is time to socialise and an (optional) buffet meal before the main event begins. Each year we organise at least one visit to a site of maritime interest, where a conducted tour adds greatly to the day. The highlight of each year’s programme is the Rally held over the early May Bank Holiday weekend, at the RHYC Marina. There we are joined by visitors from the Essex and Kent Sections, and from even further afield. If you would like to receive a copy of the Section Newsletter electronically, please send your email address to david-sadler@lineone.net.

We look forward to meeting you at one of the Section events.

All members, where ever you live, are most welcome to attend the Winter Talks and Outings and to bring friends and family with you.

The talks are held at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, Woolverstone. Ipswich. IP9 1AT, where there is ample free parking available.

The evening talks start when the bar opens at 18.00, then a two course buffet supper with coffee at 18.45 (£12-50/head), followed by the talk at 20.00

SECTION MATTERS

WELCOME BACK

Welcome back from where ever you have been cruising. I hope that you were able to enjoy the wonderful weather in May and June. This is written onboard in mid August. It is cold, windy and the forecast is for thundery rain. Perhaps it will be better tomorrow. ( It wasn't - Force 7).

Colin and Elspeth and "Scarba" were last encountered motoring through the Swin Spitway on her way for a short break in London before heading off for the Baltic. Latest news from them (29 August) is that they have managed to reach Ostend on their way home and are there waiting for a break in the weather to accomplish the last lap.

David and Valerie in "Spirit of Rosinis" were able to benefit from the spring weather by leaving Woolverstone straight after the Spring Rally, cruising down Channel to Poole and crossing to the Channel Isles and the lovely Ile de Bréhat in North Brittany. All these areas were quiet in May and June and into July, with more Dutch and Belgian yachts in harbour than British. We found that prices in France were markedly higher when compared with our last visit six years ago. Not only the effect of the weak pound, but also from an apparent ‘sting the visitors' policy at the French marinas. Mooring charges in Alderney, Beaulieu and Newtown on the Isle of Wight were all less than those for a buoy off Lézardrieux.

NEW MEMBERS

Welcome to new members of the Suffolk Section. By the time this Newsletter arrives you should have received a Welcome Letter giving general information about our activities. If you have any queries, please contact one of the Section Secretaries (details above). We look forward to meeting you.
