Lyme Bay Events

Below are details of our upcoming events. Please contact us for more details.

10th February 2010

Lyme Bay members Leighton and Cathy King have kindly agreed to talk on their very up-to-date experiences of living aboard. They are back from Makarma, their boat and home, presently in the Ionian in Greece, for a break over Christmas and we are delighted that they are going to tell us what it is really like to head off on the "grand tour".

10th March 2010– Peter Crook (also Lyme Bay member and committee member). Peter is the (recently-elected) President of the Devon Old Gaffers Association and the national OGA membership secretary, so is one of the leading funds of knowledge on gaff rigged vessels generally. He has no less than 3 (possibly more?) boats in varying stages of restoration and is going to talk on restoring and refitting his classic yachts following the recent articles in Classic Boat.

14th April 2010 Drummond Challis, filmmaker of "Riddle of the Sands" (who came to talk to us on that subject a few years ago] will talk on the life of Erskine Childers, author of the famous book (of the film). His talk is entitled "The Riddle of Erskine Childers" – an interesting and enigmatic figure who Drummond has studied in considerable detail.

We are hoping that all of the above meetings will be at Topsham Sailing Club - BUT PLEASE- watch your emails for confirmation, especially of the next (February) meeting, as this is still subject to confirmation from Topsham. When we are at Topsham, as usual we will meet around 1800 for a meal together at The Globe Hotel in Topsham High Street with the talk starting at the Sailing Club at 2000. Please let Mike Eastman know beforehand if possible if you wish to eat there so he can advise the hotel.

April 2010 Walk

We are planning to walk to Froward Point to visit the Coast Watch Station, the nearby WW2 fortifications and the Dartmouth Daymark, followed by a pub/club lunch. Details will be circulated later.

8th – 9th May 2010 Annual Brixham Rally and 25th – 26th September 2010 Annual Dartmouth Rally. Both dates are as yet provisional but please put them in your diary.
