Cruising Cork and Kerry; Graham Swanson; Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson, 2005; £27.50; CA16669.

From Youghal to the mouth of the Shannon Graham Swanson covers the coastline most readily accessible on a typical three-week cruise from Falmouth via the Isles of Scilly.  Planned to complement, rather than challenge, the Irish Cruising Club's Sailing Directions (or presumably the CA's Cruising Almanac), it provides a wealth of additional information which will greatly assist the enjoyment and safety of a cruise. It is profusely illustrated with excellent aerial photographs especially commissioned from Patrick Roach and annotated to identify coastal features and anchorages with the author's photographs of interesting places and things to see ashore.

Gleaned on three extensive cruises of the area the narrative is packed with details of pilotage, tidal streams, fish farms, hazards, shops, fuel and gas availability and local transport as well as pubs and their landlords, fascinating local, historical, and ornithological information and anecdotes which together make it a joy to read. Some 40 large scale chartlets clearly show the approaches to anchorages and harbours.  A welcome innovation is a set of paintings of the area’s prolific seabirds in flight.

Highly recommended both for the yachtsperson keen to explore this beautiful corner of Ireland, or as in the reviewer's case, to relive happy memories of cruises in past years. – RMG
