Pocket Guide to Knots; Lindsey Philpott; New Holland, 2006; £9.99; CA 16667
There is no doubt that this will only fit a substantial pocket – perhaps it is for those of us who still use the duffle coat. That said, we are presented with a range of hitches, bends, bindings, braids, seizing and splices that are described and effectively demonstrated in sequential photographs that make even the unfamiliar quite easy to tie. A few early pages explain some history of knot tying and the tools used, ways of caring for ropes and cordage, and the techniques used. There are many unfamiliar presentations which are of general interest to the outdoor enthusiast. They include, for example, specific demonstrations of tying a bowline around yourself or to harness.
There are many books that address this subject. Most of them do not do it better and some offer fewer examples. The presentation is undoubtedly good but even though it is in paperback, the price per knot, as a previous reviewer commented, is significant by comparison with Ashley, at 10p.
