Shetland Islands Pilot; compiled Arthur Houston; Clyde Cruising Club Publications Ltd.; Amended to August 2005; CA 16692.

Just what a pilot book should be.  I used to hold up the Irish Cruising Club’s Pilot books as the near perfect example of a pilot book but now they have a serious challenger for the accolade. This Pilot starts with a map of  the whole area covered by the book so you can easily refer back to the big picture.  It is clear, precise and not full of guide book information which you won’t need until you have been “piloted in”.  There is therefore no temptation to carry the book ashore where you might leave it on a cafe table.

It contains a short résumé of the information you need of a general nature noting the limitations of the area. There are clear instructions for passage planning along with simple, clear colour chartlets of each port.  I commend the attempt to keep each port to a single page.  There are some lovely colour photographs. Nice to have but how much does it affect the costs, especially now that they are being included along with more and more almanac type information, in electronic charts?

I would not dream of cruising the Shetland Islands without this book.  It so obviously has the input from experienced, practical cruising sailors. Well done Clyde Cruising Club and well done Arthur Houston. - RPY
