Atlantic Adventure (video); .Sabine Christine Applehagen, Ed.; Producer:Jimmy Cornell; A World Cruising Production, 1994; CAV 16689.
A one hour video from the Yachting World Video collection is sub-titled "Crossing the Atlantic with the ARC" and was produced in 1994. It is
mainly a series of brief shots with participants interspersed with the practicalities of the crossing but there are some excellent action sequences
especially of the wild life and the transference of a sick crew between yachts.
The rally starts in Las Palmas, where there are good shots of the preparations, and ends in St.Lucia. There is a large variety of yachts and numbers of
crew. All the different aspects of the crossing are well covered and discussed especially route planning, safety, provisioning, communications, sail plans
and even sea-sickness. These apply to any offshore passage and there are many useful tips we can all pick up. The photography is superb and it makes
me very envious.
It certainly is a must for anyone contemplating an Atlantic crossing but is also good entertainment for the armchair sailor. The biggest lesson
to learn from it is that good preparation is all important. Borrow it from the Library. - NCT
