Faroe, Iceland and Greenland; compiled by Christopher Thornhill & Willy Ker; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 2nd ed., 1998; 102pp; ISBN 0-85288-376-5; £22.50; CA 15268

Pilot books are produced for so many areas now. They enable so many of us to enter waters safely that without them we could not do. It was Dr. Fred Ellis whose generosity founded the R.C.C’s Pilotage Foundation under whose auspices this book was compiled. I hope we never forget what it takes to produce them and take them for granted. It is a pleasure to receive a pilot that sticks to piloting on the sea and doesn’t become too large and expensive by trying to cover the work of a guidebook. This is just such a one: simple, clear and to the point with plenty of very good sketch charts. It will become even better as more people visit the area and their input is added, but its one hundred odd pages already form an excellent and comprehensive pilot book. At £22.50 it is not cheap but neither is the loss of one’s ship! I would certainly find a place for it on board. –RPY
