The Call of the Coast; by Charles Lillard; Horsdal & Schubart, 1992; 166pp; ISBN 0-920-663-14-1; Can.$ 9.95; CA 15221

Charles Lillard has put together a series of talesinvolving the early settlers - voyagers and travellers - who roamed the Pacific coast between Alaska and Vancouver Island. Most are based on Puget Sound. The earliest, dated 1853, encompass the loggers as well as fishermen, and, in one tale entitled " The Salt Whisky War", it necessitated the involvement of HMS Forward - a steam-powered vessel - in pursuit of Indian pirates who had looted a passenger carrying sailing vessel. A certain Kathrene Pinkerton writes an anecdotal chapter concerning thre small cruising yachts which, from the description, were probably built in the 1930’s and is followed by another saga in which two yachts cruise in company. But no hint is given of the dates when these adventures took place nor a meaningful description of the craft. This paperback is more for the home library than the chartroom. - PJ
