Caribbean Passage Making, A Cruiser’s Guide; Les Weatheritt; Adlard Coles Nautical, 2004; £15.99; CA 16501.
Having been asked to do this review in a hurry I was not enthused by my first rapid scan, many mediocre black and white photos (mostly ‘agency’ ones), a section of tourist office ‘agency’ colour photographs and greyed out text boxes, that seemed to have been added as an afterthought, but then I became so enthralled by various snippets that I ordered a copy for myself!
Over the 8 years to 2004, Les Weatheritt has learned his Caribbean passage making lessons well and has passed them on for those who would like to follow in his footsteps; thus allowing his readers to start much further up the learning curve than he was when he started.
The main reason I ordered a copy for myself was that, as an RYA Instructor, I felt compelled to pass on to my students some of his excellent advice. For example, his advice on anchoring is some of the best I have read and reflects my own experience. The rest of the wisdom contained in Caribbean Passage Making is equally worthwhile and though I have no plans to return to the region I shall enjoy dipping into this dream maker, time and again.
Les has willingly given credit to, and recommended, other pilots and guides one should also carry for safe and happy cruising in the Eastern Caribbean. This with all the other information and advice given makes the reading of Caribbean Passage Making highly recommended for those who plan to go there. - IGPage prepared 31 January 2006
