Cruising Guide to the Netherlands; Brian Navin; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 4th ed., 2004; £25.00; CA 16645
Up to date cruising guides to the Netherlands in the English language are hard to come by and this fourth edition of Brian Navin’s guide is one of the few that attempts to fill this gap.
The book is again presented as a series of routes, which cover a selection of the waterways accessible by boats with fixed masts (albeit only up to 12 metres air draught in some cases). The information provided concentrates mainly on pilotage, harbour details, and bridge and lock openings, with an introductory commentary on the route provided at the beginning of each chapter. Non-nautical details such as tourist attractions and cultural description are kept to a minimum, and there is little mention of restaurants or shopping facilities.
The main differences from the third edition are in the quality of the presentation with colour ground level and aerial photographs now illustrating the work throughout. These, too, are strictly nautical and refrain from illustrating other aspects of the country’s heritage and landscape. The harbour plans have also been produced in colour, and whilst the detail remains much the same, this does make them easier to use. Unfortunately a few errors have persisted, including some which were noted as corrections to the previous edition.
Although noticeably slimmer than the previous edition, this has been achieved through use of a better quality, finer paper, rather than fewer pages. – LB
