Adriatic Pilot; Trevor and Dinah Thompson; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 2005; CA 16615
Having just returned from a charter in Croatia, I see even more clearly the benefits of the style of pilot we are now familiar with from Imrays. Charter boats tend to have the locally produced pilot on board, by the Leksikografski Institut in Zabreg - mercifully translated into English. What I missed was the warmth of the narrative and the titbits of information that we are used to and which make the anticipation of a new landfall something to look forward to even more.
On this occasion I spent a few days wandering the islands within a day or two’s sail from Split. In all cases I have subsequently checked, the Thompson is up to date with clear instructions for port entry and description of the facilities available. The narrative is clear and advice for mooring sound. There are some idyllic spots and some remain free from boatmen seeking a fee for overnight stays that have apparently become common in the Kornati. These places are precious as the presence of prepared moorings on a town quay now seem to qualify for the title of marina with overnight fees that might be the envy of MDL in the UK. The guidance in the Imray is worth taking with you for the anchorages alone – but really for much more. It is worth noting that the Imray is also up to date with modifications noted when I was in South East Italy a couple of years ago whereas this is not so in the local standard work. - MD
