Secret Anchorages of Brittany; Peter Cumberlidge; Imray Laurie Norie and Wilson, 2nd ed., 2005; CA 16595

The Brittany coast is some of the most beautiful in Europe and this volume shows it off to its full advantage. With alluring descriptions and sumptuous photography, it describes in detail the potential anchorages along this wonderful coast from Cap de la Hague to the mouth of the Loire.

The focus of the book is the little known anchorages, there are no details of marinas or distances to showers or fuel. Instead the reader is treated to a narrative about the histories and local cultures of the places along the way. There is plenty of practical information about each place, but, whether this is a pilot book or not is open to debate. Certainly the phrase is not used in the book and no claims of such are made, but the logical format and clear charts could earn it a place on the chart table.

The format of the book, short descriptions, interspersed with explanatory text and evocative photographs is similar to that of a celebrity cook book, but do not let that put you off, this is a book to savour and take pleasure in. It will inspire whole cruises as well as inform the passage plan. It will make a fine present, and if you cannot organise it so you are the recipient, you may want to treat yourself. - JP
