North Biscay, West Coast of France, Brest to Bordeaux; Mike and Gill Barron; Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation, 7th ed., 2005; £35; CA 16513.

Few would cruise this fascinating area without this pilot aboard.  It has been virtually rewritten and is now 35 pages longer.  New anchorages are included, especially around Belle Ile.  With the decline in fishing some harbours have become more yacht friendly and there are now even two small pontoons at Le Guilvinec.  The previous plans have been retained but they are now coloured and have had waypoints added.

There is a waypoint index as an appendix.  However, there is a warning that the waypoints are in WGS84 while many French charts are in ED50.  There could be 150m difference.  Guidance is given for both electronic and traditional navigation.  The coloured photographs are all new, very sharp and many aerial.  Room is still found for snippets of history and what to do ashore.  Apart from its immense practical use this book is a thing of beauty in its own right. - JLC
