The fourteenth and final novel in the the Nathaniel Drinkwater series, Drinkwater being a British naval officer who fought in the Napoleonic wars. The author follows the well-trodden path of C S Forester and Horatio Hornblower, and does it rather well, but as this concluding volume constantly refers back to the earlier adventures it is probably best to read the earlier books first. For those who already have, Captain Sir Nathaniel Drinkwater is now fast approaching his dotage and the Napoleonic wars have been over 28 years. Newly elected to the Court of Trinity House, he has come out of comfortable retirement to board the paddle steamer Vestal to inspect lighthouses in the West Country. In a series of flashbacks, Drinkwater remembers incidents in his life, itself a clue as to how the author intends to polish his hero off. ID
