No Port in a Storm by Bob MacAlinden; Whittles Publishing, 1998; 146pp; b&w photos; 1-870325-37-0; £12.95; CA 15227

A sad chronicle of disaster and loss of life over the 250 year old span of manned lightships, enlightened by examples of the courage and fortitude of their crews, who maintained a lonely vigil. In danger from stress of weather and the failure of moorings, under the threat of being run down in fog, lightships played a crucial role in making landfalls less hazardous for mariners of sailing ships, particularly in the 19th century, when the navigation techniques were rudimentary.

Public libraries and yacht clubs may need this book for reference, rather than for general reading. Well-researched and illustrated. JFP
