Understanding Navigation;  Amberley Marine, 2003; CAD16464

Having learned pilotage and navigation from skippers and books before any electronic teaching aids were available I approached this DVD with some trepidation. Going straight through it in one go was like watching a very good TV documentary. No adverts, no background noise and a well modulated voice, which held the attention rather than generating sleep. Starting from first principles the chapters lead very smoothly from one subject to the next.

Each chapter can be easily reviewed to check that it has been understood. There is a lot of information so each chapter needs watching many times to get the most from it.

With the practice charts to hand the interactive exercises cover a lot of work, but as with all similar practice exercises the answers are only the start. Some form of help is needed to ensure the working is done correctly.

The film’s summing up: knowing enough about where you are and where you are going in order to relax and enjoy your boat, is a good dictum for the amateur. – PG
