Admiral Nelson; Sam
Llewellyn; Short Books, 2004; £4.99; CA 16375
Who was Admiral Nelson, the cover asks, the sailor who dared all to win. CA members will probably not learn anything new here, but this book is aimed at children. It, "ties in with the history curriculum at key stage 2", the cover says, in the bureaucratic language teachers today must endure. That means, I am told, those aged 10-13. As sadly I am outside that range, I tried two people who are, or shortly will be. This is what they had to say:
"I enjoyed this book because I enjoyed reading about the sea
battles" -
Thomas Braben, aged 7.
"I enjoyed reading this book. I found the illustrations helpful, and liked
hearing about the tactics. I would have liked a bit more detail" - Dexter
Saunders, aged 10.
The book is indeed easy to read, if on the short side. It covers most of the ground, and even mentions Nelson's torrid affair with Emma Hamilton. It seems a highly recommended is in order! DWB
