Day Skipper Exercises: Questions and Answers; Pat Langley-Price & Philip Ouvry; Adlard Coles; 2nd Ed., 2003; £15.99; CA 16321.

I still possess a 1965 example of this excellent concept.  In this modern version 12 sections offer self-test exercises that range from basic chart familiarisation to passage planning; with the answers given as ‘model’ and complete, but without theoretical explanation.  Sufficient information for the student is given in 22 extracts of tidal information, port details and the like, while all plotting can be practised on the included exercise charts.

This nicely produced book is clear and unambiguous, but endorses the authors’ caution that one week spent [actually navigating a boat] on a coastal passage is more valuable than a whole winter in shore-based classes.-             EC
