NP 290, Maritime Communications, Caribbean, Admiralty Leisure; Brian Robertson & Des Thompson; UKHO, 2nd ed., 2003; 325 pages; £17.95; CA 16333.

Having been brought up in the days when Naval Publications were clearly for Her Majesty’s Royal Navy, and despite using Small Craft Charts, I still find the concept of Admiralty Leisure a little odd!  However, Maritime Communications, Caribbean is a Naval Publication targeted at the Leisure Market and very well aimed it is too.

The first edition received an excellent review from the Cruising Association and the second edition is even better.  As to be expected, it contains all the latest information on GMDSS and DSC procedures, Weather and Safety broadcasts (including NAVTEX and SafetyNET).  In addition, all the colour diagrams have been updated and many new diagrams and aerial photographs of marinas, have been added, as has been the West Coast of Florida.  Maximum LOA, maximum draft and number of berths have been added to many of the marina listings, to make them as useful, surprisingly, as those found in yachting almanacs.

Furthermore, monthly amendments will be available from Section VI of the interactive Notice to Mariners website www.nmwebsearch.com, from where, it is claimed, amended colour diagrams and text can be downloaded easily, when needed, to maintain the accuracy of the information. -  IG
