Day Skipper; Pat Langley-Price and Philip Ouvry; Adlard Coles Nautical, 3rd ed., 2003; £18; CA 16274
Although aimed principally at the
aspiring Day Skipper wishing to obtain a RYA Certificate, if you knew all the contents of
this book you would also be well on the way to becoming a Yacht Master.
The information is all inclusive from the exact formation of a chart and its use, compass effects, tides, pilotage, passage planning, weather, electronic aids, communications, ropework, anchoring, safety and the Prevention of Collisions Regulations. There is a comprehensive glossary of nautical terms, and just to make sure you have understood everything there is a section of test papers and the answers with a practice chart. The book is a hard back handy size (9½ x 6¼ ins), exceedingly well printed and illustrated with clear diagrams and photos. If I have a criticism, it is minor. I would like to have had the chart tucked into a pocket, rather than as it is, stuck inside the back cover. It has been an easy, instructive and very pleasant book to review and would not come amiss in ones boats library as an aide memoire or revision assistant. - FT
