When I was asked for a quick turnround of the review of this small paperback, I found it no trouble at all as it is an eminently readable light book, both physically and in content. The subtitle is "One man,his boat and the weather"-which probably applies to many of us.
It is the account of Sam's journey in an old leaking rowing boat from the mountains of Wales, down the Severn, through the canals of the Midlands to the Thames at Oxford and then onwards to Westminster. He undertakes it in October which turns out to be the wettest on record. It is written in a very light and amusing style which is rather similar to that of Bill Bryson. His descriptions of the places he passes and the people he meets are very evocative and entertaining.
A very quick, pleasant and amusing read, but not on a wet day-there is enough rain in his story. - NCT
