Cruising The Coast of Ireland, A Practical Guide by John Leonard , Practical Boat Owner 1997, 28pp, £5

This guide will be a useful introduction to those thinking of cruising to Ireland who have not ventured there before. It covers the coast from the Shannon going clockwise round the SW comer and along the South coast and then up to Malahide North of Dublin. It would go very well with the Cruising Association's video for those thinking of visiting this splendid cruising ground for the first time.

There are many excellent photographs in fact too many. With such wonderful scenery to take it seems a pity to put in so many tiny snaps which are not really worth looking at. The larger photographs are brilliant when they are not as in 'Kissing Ryan's daughter' ruined by the large type face intruding.

The production is spoilt by overkill with too much change of colour and typeface. It detracts from good script to have four different combinations of type colour and background on one page.

Technically it is very good and I can find no fault except perhaps for the distance plan which shows 51 miles from Milford Haven to Tuskar Rock. Correct but so what; you still have 32 miles to Dunmore East or 18 to tricky Kilmore Quay. A very handy first timer's guide. A.T.B-J.
