The Inland Waterways
Manual;Emrhys Barrell; Adlard Coles, 2rd ed., 2003; £14.99;
CA 16184
Aimed at the complete novice this is, as the title says, a comprehensive manual on all aspects of Inland Waterway boating. It is firmly aimed at the Inland enthusiast, even starting by pointing out that there is less stress, and expense, in Inland Waterway cruising in comparison with sea going cruising.
So for the reader having made the choice to go cruising inland, and just starting out, this is the book to read from cover to cover. Every aspect on the boat from choosing and buying, to the handling and manoeuvring is carefully detailed. Choice of cruising areas gets the same careful treatment as do the pros and cons of trailer boating.
All in all it lives up to the claim of being a manual on the topic, and will be of value to the novice. - AJM
