The RYA Book of Navigation; Tim Bartlett; Adlard Coles Nautical; 2nd edition; 2002; £12.99; CA 16086

Designed to complement the RYA courses (sail and power boat), this reference book is excellent not only for students, but also for sailors using traditional navigation techniques wishing to acquire an understanding of modern electronic aids.

Tim Bartlett explains logically the basics of navigation: chart work, measuring direction and distance, position fixing including the use of vertical sextant angles, the effect of tides, shaping a course, pilotage, passage planning and passage making. A complete chapter is devoted to using radar for collision avoidance and position fixing using range measurement. Other electronic aids such as fish-finders, depth sounder, GPS and chart plotters are also described.

The book is illustrated with clear diagrams, worked examples and black and white photos of instruments including radar screens. - DB
