Only So Many Tides; Jon Wainwright; Seafarer Books, 2001; CA 15966

By the time this review is published, the author will have given his lecture on the same subject at CA House. It is the story of a man's lifelong love affair with a boat called "Deva". She is a humble wooden "noddy", a north-west prawner of the River class; "Deva" is latin for Dee. He bought her in 1962 in Liverpool and took her through the canals to the East coast where he raced her successfully. He tells of many trials and tribulations - not least his heart problems so that he devised an easily handled "cardiac" rig. He was very much involved with the Old Gaffers Association and their cruises and races to Holland. There is considerable discussion about the most efficient rig and how to get the best out of a heavy wooden boat.

His writing style has a good sense of humour but I found the layout of this paperback a little odd at first as there is a large printing gap between each paragraph which makes you think he is going on to another subject, but often isn't. There are 8 black and white photos and some lovely line drawings.

It all makes me wish I could have gone to the lecture. - NCT

Editorial note: unfortunately this review and book went missing for many weeks. This review should have appeared around Christmas 2001.
