Ocean Yachtmaster; Pat Langley-Price and Philip Ouvry; Adlard Coles Nautical; 2nd edition; 2002; ISBN 1-7136-6220-4; £22; CA 16010

Pat Langley-Price and Philip Ouvry have almost cornered the market in set books for the RYA Yachtmaster courses, following a well tried formula. The coverage is very thorough, with question papers at the end of every chapter.

This latest version makes reference to GPS and the use of calculators. There is a useful chapter on preparing for an ocean passage with some good references, and the chapter on world weather is simple and easier to follow.

The front cover has an attractive colour photograph, but otherwise there are no photos and few illustrations. To some extent this is offset by the inclusion of a star chart. There are less expensive textbooks on celestial navigation available, and alternatives that would be easier for the independent learner to follow. In conclusion, Ocean Yachtmaster is recommended as a course text but if one was wishing to learn the rudiments directly from the book, it would be worthwhile making a few comparisons. - CN
