The RNLI Handbook; Tim Bartlett, ed.; RNLI, 2000; £19.50 (members only); CA 15967
Subtitled for all who use the sea, this Handbook, is available for purchase only by RNLI members, via the next catalogue, phoning 0870 727 6911 or visiting www.rnli.org.uk. The contents of this compendium of safety and emergency information are to be found in the almanacs and standard books on seamanship likely to be aboard most cruising yachts.
The advantage of this loose leaf Handbook is the presentation, with the bare bones of each topic presented in readily accessible format. Occasionally, this becomes too simplified to be of use to anyone. The print and diagrams are clear, but an index would be an improvement. I am told by an RNLI representative that there will be updates, and the future contents of the Handbook will depend on a survey of purchasers, later this year. The Filofax binder is to enable personalisation. It is not a pocket book, weighing nearly 1kg. The strong water-resistant pages have suffered slightly from a cup of reviewers coffee, and as the rings of the durable ring binder are dodgy, a replacement binder is on its way from RNLI. Leave your copy prominently aboard, or in the loo at home while the boat is laid up, for anyone to dip into for a refresher on those facts we all ought to know. - JT
