Riptide; Sam Llewellyn; House of Stratus, 2000; 0-7551-0010-7; £6.99; CA 15849

From the smart launch of the sleek 66 foot Arc-en-Ciel and her naming by the French Ambassador, the fast moving story carries one through an increasingly complex plot about fraudulent insurance claims and beautiful yachts sabotaged. Much of the story centres around La Rochelle and those with a knowledge of this wonderful cruising area will appreciate the detail. There is rather a lot of violence which our hero survives in an almost impossible fashion, and he has to cope with a wayward daughter and a friend who turns traitor and nearly leads to his untimely death.

The House of Stratus has made an excellent job of publishing this exciting story which is somewhat ‘meatier’ than many of its type and offers a splendid holiday read. - FT
