In Search of Moby Dick; Tim Severin; Abacus, 2000; 0-349-11233-9; £8.99; CA 15815
An extensively researched and well-written account of the sources for Herman Melville's classics "Typee" and "Moby Dick" that leads to an appraisal of the mixed qualities of the man himself.
Severin is inspired by his own experiences of encounters with large sea mammals on his previous ocean voyages to write a cohesive chronicle of the fast -disappearing fishing communities that hunt whales of various species, sharks and manta rays by traditional methods. As good, or better than, the original account written over a century ago, his quest for the great white whale arrives at a very satisfactory conclusion. With maps, colour phoitographs and evocative black and white drawings. - JFP
