North Brittany and Channel Islands Pilot; John Lawson; Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation, Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 2001; 0 85288 483 4; £30.00; CA 15907

You may wonder what a new pilot book can do for you. Covering the greatest of cruising areas of Western Europe in the one A4 volume; from Cherbourg to Ile d’Ouessant, including the Chenal du Four and all offshore islands between the Cotentin peninsular and NW Brittany, this is truly new in a number of respects.

The text, the supporting details on approaches, berthing etc. and above all the clarity and arrangement of the numerous chartlets and their associated clear colour photographs are so easily readable and complete. In particular, large scale chartlets and the clearest of aerial photographs mostly appear together on opening the relevant page and the latter are annotated in a particularly clear manner to identify the important marks and hazards.

Passage planning and tidal streams are missing although approach detail for each harbour and inlet is included in its entry along with all the pilotage and communications information that you could hope for including chart lists, lights, search & rescue, adjacent anchorages and facilities ashore. A must for anyone venturing into this fascinatingly diverse and complex area with the bonus that Correction Supplements will be free of charge on Imrays website (www.imrays.com) or from the publishers direct. - JDC
