Dead Reckoning; Sam Llewellyn; House of Stratus new edition 2000; 9-780755-100026; £6.99; CA 15845

If you like to be dry and warm, eat from a table that does not twitch around yet still have your high seas adventure, then Sam Llewellyn is the author for you.

The first two chapters of this book offer a breathless rush of lifeboat action, failed rescue, injury and family conflict. In Chapter three the story "settles down" to one of character clash and action - love and hate interest; business rivalry; and, above all, state-of- the-art racing yacht design. The struggles in all aspects maintain interest until the last page - I read this at one sitting - as the competition increases. There is a viciousness that makes me think, and be glad, that the worlds of cruising sailors and the racing skippers are very different. I prefer the former but the latter make for brilliant reading. - SM
