We The Navigators: The Ancient Art of Landfinding in the Pacific; David Lewis; University of Hawaii Press, 1994, $24.95, ISBN 0-8248-1582-3, CA 15897
Have you wondered how the Polynesians in their sailing canoes found tiny Pacific islands without sextants or compasses, let alone GPS? This fascinating work tells how they used the stars, swell patterns and phosphorescence caused by wave reflections froms distant islands, winds, birds and clouds. Although partly technical, much is very readable, and beautifully illustrated. In addition to navigational details it explains why they sailed and how their craft were constructed.
This is a second edition to the original work published in 1972 and adds the results of new research in the appendices. - RMG
