The Iron Hotel; Sam Llewellyn; House of Stratus, this ed. 2000; 0-7551-0009-3; £6.99; CA 15852

Rollicking tales from Sam Llewellyn have the action packed energy that makes for undemanding reading. The boat is rather larger than we usually find with this author being of some 350 feet x 90 - a decaying vessel heading for the breakers but carrying a human cargo escaping from China for new lives in the USA.

We are introduced to David Jenkins, an experienced captain from a distinguished line who has broken the rules and finds legitimate work impossible. His assignment to the Glory of Saipan as First Mate arises from his failure to meet the repayments on a loan from some very shady characters. By default and one of the many unpleasant deaths on board, he becomes Captain and wins through in the end to what is a substantially satisfactory end for all but the bad people.

A vivid book, The Iron Hotel is typical of its genre and offers a good pastime for those on holiday, off watch or travelling. - MJD
