Yet another book by a couple circumnavigating – it has all been done and written about many times before – and yet this book kept my interest throughout.
Beth Leonard and her partner, Evans, gave up their jobs as international management consultants in their 30s to learn to sail and then to spend three years circumnavigating from Newport in their 37 foot Shannon ketch, Silk.
This is not a book from which to learn how to sail the world, but rather a temptation to undertake such a project. Beth Leonard describes delightfully the many places visited and in particular the Pacific Islands, relating both the lifestyle and the history of the early explorers. Despite moments of fear and crises at sea, the emphasis is on the pleasures and not the pain of sailing.
Excellent photographs throughout add further colour to the narrative and leave the reader with the strong desire to be anchored in some far off lagoon.- AMB
