Radar Afloat - Official Background Reader to the RYA Radar Course; Tim Bartlett; Fernhurst Books,3rd ed., 2001; £11.95;
A successful attempt to bridge the gap between the manufacturer's instruction manual and the more weighty books on radar use written for professional users, this is essential reading for those wishing to make the most of their equipment. Tim Bartlett's guide is written specifically for small boat users and in a language and style that is readily understood. He covers the subject well and takes the reader logically from switching on through the correct tuning and picture interpretation to its use for collision avoidance, navigation and blind pilotage, each section clearly illus- - trated with photographs diagrams and charts that relate to practical situations. At £11.95 it represents excellent value and I shall be ordering my own copy to keep on board. - RJW
This edition is little changed from a copy of 'A Small Boat Guide to Radar' except for the cover and the title. The above review was for that earlier edition. It remains an excellent guide and the modest price change over 10 years is pleasing and makes for good value. (Ed.)
