The Trials of Wells Harbour; John Barney; Mintaka Books, 2000; ISBN 0-95378-090-2; £6.50; CA 15732
If you are interested in our ever changing coastline, especially in East Anglia, then you will be fascinated by this book. The subject is very topical, with the Environment Agency recently inaugurating in-depth studies of the coastline here, and the Suffolk rivers, with a view to forming a management strategy. The subject of this book is solely the harbour of Wells-next-the-sea in Norfolk, the changes that have occurred over the years wrought by nature and by man. Just as today we see that the results are influenced as much by commercial considerations, opinions, and human frailty as by nature and science.
John Barney has researched his subject thoroughly, quoting all his sources and illustrating the book with charts as far back as possible and with aerial photographs. The whole history is thereby revealed and my opinion, albeit that of an East Anglian, is that any East Coast sailor will relish it. - JSS
