Ionian (4th edition); Rod Heikell; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 1999; ISBN 0-85288-423-0; £12.95; CA 15678

The latest in a long line of yachting pilots, this edition is produced in the well-honed style adopted by author and publisher over many years.

The Ionian being one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising areas, a relatively high volume of sales is guaranteed. This has allowed the publisher to utilise four colour printed plans and tinted areas amongst the 182 pages at 245 x 190mm, a size well-suited to yachts’ bookshelves. Excellent quality photography, reproduction and printing on suitable paper has created a very pleasing result.

The looks are matched by a wealth of pilotage and general information, presented in a consistent, easily follwed format. Another benefit of Heikell’s comprehensive knowledge of the Ionian is his inclusion of many anecdotes, historical and other descriptive items amongst the more factual matter.

It is no surprise that the volume is standard equipment on most flotilla and charter yachts. Your reviewer, a long time user of Heikell pilots, suggests that there is no better companion for anyone intending to cruise this delightful if rather busy area! – ARB
