Steve and Linda Dashew are well-known and experienced sailors and yacht designers. “Surviving the Storm” concentrates on reports from others ( many already covered in other publications) of various gales and mishaps at sea. These are then briefly analysed together with some detailed weather input and conclusions drawn. It makes interesting if rather heavy reading. The section contributed by professional sailors is the most valuable.

The authors’ previous “Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia” and “Mariners’ Weather Handbook”, both reviewed here during the last year, are probably more useful additions to the cruising library. - KJHS
