Cruising Guide to Southeast Asia, Volume II; Stephen Davies & Elaine Morgan; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 1999; ISBN 0-85288-378-1; £30.00 ; CA 15640
The second of two volumes that cover this vast cruising area ranges through Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, the Malacca Straits to Phuket. The aim is to give good planning and initial cruising data for a region that takes up 8 Admiralty Pilot volumes.
The authors explain with some care the advantages and shortfalls that this implies. It gives excellent insights to the way in which journeys may be planned. Its many monochrome charts and maps are useful for approaching the coast. More detailed charts are necessary for extensive coasting. We are told that charts for the area are rapidly improving. Availability can be a problem. Accuracy needs checking especially as charts are often based on 19 century surveys. Traditional navigation and eyeball methods are recommended.
The book has three parts. An Introduction covers matters for general consideration: a little history, help with concerns over piracy, smuggling and politics. Part 2 is a Planning Guide covering thoroughly topics ranging from weather to telecoms, from the environment to health matters and indigenous food. Part 3 is a Cruising Guide covering each region logically showing coastal charts and more detail of principal harbours and ports. Appendices talk about medical matters, addresses, local racing, a glossary of local terms and a good bibliography.
Elaine Morgan is a CA member and acknowledges the benefits of the CA regional files. This will become the standard work for people sailing in the area as well as a useful guide for those travelling by any means. - MJD
