Stop trying to match the fantasy “Suffolk” landscape to your own experience; overcome thedistractions of unusual place names; settle down for a good read. The main theme of this novel is the difference between the “affluent, anachronistic Enid Blyton summer set” and the “city, cynical underclass”. This is of particular interest as these are the apparently opposing environments in which I work and play. Do not be put off by the social message – the finale is optimistic.

Against a sailing background which is as real as you would expect, the characters, their emotions and actions are as interesting as you could wish. From the Alde to the Crouch you may be confused as to the exact location but you will recognise Sheila, Harry, the Yacht Club crowd and the children. All the arrogance, snobbism, competence is there – as is the tolerance and generosity which eventually resolves the conflict. – SM
