Channel Pilot NP27 by Admiralty; Hydrographic Office, 1999; 4th ed.; ISBN none; £36.50; CA 15602 (486pp)

These authoritative Sailing Directions cover the Channel coasts from the Scilly Islands to Bognor Regis, and Pointe de la Torche to Cap d’Antifer including the Channel Islands. They are intended to be used in conjunction with Admiralty Charts, the coverage of which is shown in a new map at the start of each chapter.

Chapter 1 deals with weather in great detail, with climatic tables, maps with wind roses, sea temperature, etc.. Chapter 2 deals with through-routing. The remaining 11 chapters cover coastal sections. Full colour is introduced with great effect in 114 new and mainly aerial photographs, although their distribution is still patchy, e.g. Chapter 8 covering Pointe de la Torche to Le Four has none.

Formerly of interest mainly to larger ships, details of access and facilities for most marinas and small boat anchorages are now included, often with aerial photographs. Much information not readily available elsewhere, such as a tidal atlas to the Le Havre approach, is also included.

The Admiralty Sailing Directions should be carried by all serious yachtsmen, but Almanacs and/or the CA Handbook are still needed for additional ephemeral information. RMG
