Day Skipper Exercises questions and answers; by Pat Langley Price & Philip Ouvry; Adlard Coles Nautical, 1998; ISBN 0-7136-4630-6; £12.99; CA 15514
These exercises have been prepared as a supplement to the textbook Day Skipper from the same publishers. Probably both books should be used.
The questions cover Chartwork and Tides to Pilotage and Passage Planning. The Admiralty Practice Chart 5061 Dover to North Foreland is provided. A delightfully complex area for the tyro. The important point is made that in distress, positions should be given as bearing from, and distance off, known land or seamarks. Failure to do this has caused much wasted time for lifeboats and other rescue vessels. Exercises are clearly laid out and testing answers often have useful comments, which add greatly to understanding. The exercises on Pilotage, Coastal and Cross-Channel passages are excellent. Both authors hold Ocean Yachtmaster certificates and are RYA Instructors.
The book is highly recommended for those following the RYA Day Skipper shore based courses. Working through the questions will be an invaluable refresher for all navigators of yachts and cruisers. -MJ
