Italian Waters Pilot; by Rod Heikell; Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, 5th ed. 1998; ISBN 0-85288-409-5; CA 15415

Rod Heikell has written a series of pilots covering the central and Eastern Mediterranean which are recognised as being the most detailed and authoritative for cruising in this region. This latest edition is laid out in the same clear, logical style and covers just about everything you need to know to prepare and sail a boat round these waters.

Typical passages show details of anchorages including holding and local winds. Descriptions of ports and marina facilities, such as restaurants, water and buses etc., etc. are comprehensive. This information is clearly presented and shown on many invaluable plans. A light sprinkling of general information and history provides a useful insight and possibly a reason to visit a particular anchorage. In the 5th edition the harbour information, including the rearrangement of pontoons has been updated and numerous plans redrawn; a series of aerial photos principally of the Riviera, Tuscan islands and Sardinia have also been included.

As well as drawing on his own experience, information is gathered from many of the Mediterranean cruising fraternity including the CA which he kindly acknowledges: " To all who contributed to the CA notes at Limehouse, my thanks".

If you are planning or cruising in this beautiful region, for little more than the cost of a few nights in a marina, but this latest edition and save the cost many times over in peaceful anchorages. - NC
