Gavin Lesueur, Multihull Seamanship, Fernhurst, 1997, URN 14408, D1.5, ISBN 1-898660-31-X, £14.95

There are too few good books on multihulls outlining their special problems of sailing offshore and handling around marinas; this one makes up for the shortage. Cruising and racing designs are covered with, perhaps, an emphasis on cruising Catamarans. The contents are arranged as an A-Z running from anchoring to whales. There are the usual seamanship notes but biased towards the peculiar characteristics of multihulls. This is first noticed in the chapter on anchoring and the problems of lying more to the wind than current.

In a fast multihull the apparent wind comes much further ahead as boat speed increases, the effect of this on 'velocity made good' is clearly explained. One states 'Only ever step-up into a life raft' emphasising the point that multihulls do not sink easily.

Capsize prevention is well discussed although the chapter on righting after capsize is more problematical.
