David R MacGregor, The Schooner; it's design & development 1600 to the present, Chatham, 1997, URN 14598, F2, ISBN 1-86176-020-5, £25.00

Half the page area is taken up with a wonderful collection of old photographs, prints, reproductions and drawings with full descriptive captions. The lack of colour does nothing to detract from their ability to grab ones attention.

The text gives detailed descriptions of the many, varied, world-wide types of Schooner rig and hull shapes since 1600. This will delight the connoisseur, educate the student and guide a maker of authentic models. It is not for the person who could not care less about deadrise, gammons or ringtails. £25 for the wealth of information and expert assessment is cheap, but not if one is simply looking for an easy read about beautiful ships.
