Gradually, cruising sailors are moving into this fascinating area that has been slowly developing since the return to the mainstream of Europe in 1989. Since joining the EU in 2007 we may assume the process will speed up and it is expected by the author that the regulations affecting passages will be eased. It is still very much “the road less travelled” and this work By Nicky Allardyce is most welcome. The author refers to Rod Heikell’s Guide to the Danube from 1991 and the Nelsons’ Black Sea Guide, acknowledging their continuing usefulness. It is the only up to date guide available and makes useful references to the relevant charts available.
106 monochrome pages in a soft cover in colour cover the very different cultures of the two countries with much detail given in the format familiar to most that use Imray’s other pilots and guides. Chapters follow the naturally defined areas and give some insight to the varying backgrounds including the fauna and flora. Brief, general chapters outline the key areas to take account of in preparation and those used to the Mediterranean need to be aware of the more limited access to fuel, water and provisions generally. Broadly, however we are given an insight into a relatively unspoiled cruising ground and the surrounding areas of the Black Sea and adjacent Turkish coast get some coverage. Neat chartlets of harbours and protected anchorages are most helpful though more caution is perhaps needed to confirm depths before mooring, which is most often alongside although the use of the Mediterranean moor is becoming more common.
CA members have explored the Danube and the areas around the Black Sea and more are planning visits in the next year or so. I imagine the publishers will be delighted to have updated information in what is expected to be a fast-developing cruising area. – Mike Davey
