The latest update to this established reference work is recommended reading by the race organisers for the many yacht skippers intending to take part in the annual “Round the Island Race”, together with its sister books “Solent Hazards” and “Solent Tides” by the same author. This unique book covers the south coast of the Isle of Wight, from the Needles round to Ryde Sands, incorporating latest changes to the coast and buoyage. The ability to take advantage of an inshore track – however hazardous – and couple it with accurate assessment of local tidal current quirks can make the difference between a prize or a damaged keel! Peter Bruce’s own Gold Roman Bowl victory and a lifetime spent among the Isle of Wight waters have made him eminently qualified as the author. However, it is also intended to be used by the dedicated in-shore fisherman or yachtsman, prepared to land in settled weather, (having somehow safely secured the mother ship off-shore). In this mode, the author recommends use of the OS Map (Outdoor leisure 29; 2in to 1 mile) in conjunction with Admiralty charts 2035, 2037, 2045. The 120 photographs contained in its 92 pages are included to assist this process. As the book is not only a navigator’s tool, but also an interesting read for foul days spent warmly ashore, one might wish for a fuller treatment of the fascinating material contained. Using 112 pages like the “Solent Hazards” volume, would give a chance for bigger pictures and more flesh on the anecdotes. Let’s hope for this in the 5th edition. Despite this comment, at £15.95 RRP, it is a perfect stocking-filler for Santa to leave for Skipper or Navigator. WM
