The Chartbook presents an ideal companion to CA16977, the general notes and guidance to sailors on the great ICW. There is little more than what it says on the cover: a comprehensive sequential running set of charts covering the almost 1100 miles of the waterway. There is an introduction that sets out the principles of the way in which the book is arranged. Charts are in full colour and are all in 1:40000 or better – some at 1:10000. They were updated to 2001 as were the bridge listings. A couple of alternative routes are also noted including the charming-sounding “Great Dismal Swamp Canal”. Mileages are noted alongside the charts in statute miles with a conversion table separate. Appendices list bridges under 65 feet, anchorages, Distance tables and NOAA chart references. We are warned to ensure we keep abreast of the relevant Notices to Mariners. The charts are presented in portrait format and are ring bound for ease of reference. – Michael Davey
