With over 25 years experience of cruising in the Mediterranean, Rod Heikell is well equipped to give practical advice on the key questions facing those planning a sojourn in that area. Written in a very readable manner and complemented by many beautiful photographs, the book covers suitable boats and equipment, formalities, financial matters, navigation, Mediterranean mooring and anchoring techniques, weather, communications and passage planning. The section on passage planning is particularly relevant, covering not only the weather expected on most of the popular cruising routes from west to east but also giving an idea of costs and identifying potential spots to lay up. Inevitable a short volume cannot give huge details, but I would have liked to see some greater advice on communications as I have found that keeping in touch with home can be one of the more expensive items when cruising. We plan to move our own boat to the Mediterranean and, despite already having some experience in the area, I found a host of useful tips including mosquito nets and caique mooring. - Tony Boas
