As a long term user of Nigel Calder's "Mechanical and Electrical Manual" and "Marine Diesel Engines", I was immediately pleased to be given this volume to review, and was not disappointed. Many who read yachting magazines will be familiar with Calder's writings; recent articles have been about building his dream boat, swiftly followed by the upgrades on the next one, so it is not surprising that this book offers a range of ideas, options and advice. Although, as might be expected from Calder there is much involving electricity, he emphasises the importance of getting sailing, and not being a slave to failed equipment. The topics covered are as in the subtitle and loosely divided into "The Boat" and "Cruising Skills". The technical aspects are more about choice, fitting and application of equipment than its repair. Subjects with a scientific basis such as meteorology and navigation are treated from first principles as well as through tips on their practical use. This is an American book, although it has an index, and UK alternatives are included - except there is considerably more about keeping cool than heaters! Do not be put off by the strangely irrelevant colour photos on the covers; inside are copious and effective black and white illustrations. Calder's earliest mentor (as was ours) was Eric Hiscock; this Manual can be considered as a modern version of "Cruising Under Sail", expanded to include technical advances as they affect choice and use of equipment. - Janet Trythall
